Great info. But I do 100% support cellphone bans k-12. The effects have been very positive-more classroom engagement, better mental health and social interactions between students, and with teachers. Less behavioral issues. An overall win for teachers, students and admin. Students can easily use phone in front office, parents can easily call front office. Not an issue!
Appreciate the perspective and respectfully disagree. Until public school admin and teachers regain our trust, there is no reason to offer it up and lots of reasons not to. I would not leave my child in a public school without a line out. It should not be at they mercy of the school personnel to allow them to reach out to their parents, kids should have this autonomy from a very young age, for safety reasons.
Most private schools have already banned phones thankfully. They were ahead of the public schools. And now many private (and public) schools are getting away from technology in the classroom. Another win for students! Autonomy for students includes not being contacted throughout the day from parents.
If we are going to talk about tech in the classroom, we should address removing edtech, rather than the low hanging fruit of cellphones, which puts responsibility on families. All children attending union schools should have a way to call their parents if they are concerned about what is happening in the school building or classroom. Doesn't have to be a smartphone, could be a flip phone, but at this point union schools should not be trusted.
