Everything we do at Restore Childhood is about supporting the healthy upbringing of children and families. That means fighting for their physical health, their mental health, their education, and their ability to think critically about the world around them.
I wanted to share my article in today’s New York Post on the new food pyramid and dietary guidelines with protein and whole foods at the top, ultra-processed garbage out. As someone who spent years fighting to get NYC schools to stop serving bag-to-oven industrial food product to over a million kids a day, I’m cautiously optimistic. Here’s hoping these guidelines reshape food subsidies and the farm bill to actually support this and future generations of kids toward health and away from chronic, diet-induced disease.
Here in NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani just reversed his position on mayoral control of schools, which means he actually has the power to implement these guidelines in our school food system. Here’s hoping he does.
Because here’s the thing: the old food pyramid had about as much science behind it as school closures did. Which is to say, none.
Both were driven by special interests—Big Food and teachers unions—wrapped in the language of “health” and “safety” while actually harming kids.
The new food pyramid under MAHA represents a shift back to common sense, back to real food, back to listening to actual evidence instead of industry lobbying. Good riddance to the old pyramid. Welcome to a new era of health.
Our documentary about the Covid school closures15 DAYS is about teaching parents and kids to see through that kind of propaganda. To ask questions. To demand actual evidence. To understand how institutions use “science” as a shield while ignoring what the science actually says. The film gives families the tools to recognize when they’re being manipulated—whether it’s about closing schools or about what goes on their plates.

Excellent article in the Post! The old food pyramid pushed by Big Food is so similar to what is playing out in schools with screens and EdTech. Let's ditch the computers and bring back whole foods, more recess and Home-Ec classes to schools!
Thanks and 💯
